We manufacture every Pelican kayak drain plug from a proprietary polypropylene blend engineered for marine environments. This material resists the full UV spectrum without becoming brittle, and it handles temperature swings from -20°F to 140°F without warping or cracking.
The threaded insert uses a buttress thread profile that distributes clamping force evenly around the O-ring groove, creating a compression seal rather than relying on thread friction alone. We mold each plug in a single operation to eliminate weak points from multi-piece assembly. The tether point integrates into the base structure and will hold 15 pounds of pull force before the attachment loop itself would fail.

Installation & Removal
Installing Your Drain Plug
Locate the threaded drain port on your kayak hull—most Pelican models place this in the stern near the back storage well. Clean any debris or dried salt from the threads using a damp cloth. Align the plug threads with the port opening and turn clockwise by hand until you feel initial resistance, then give it one additional quarter-turn to compress the seal.
Removing the Plug
Grasp the outer grip ridges and turn counterclockwise. If the plug resists turning after storage, the threads may have debris buildup. Apply light penetrating oil around the base, wait 30 seconds, then try again. Never use pliers or tools that could crack the polymer body. After removal, rinse both the plug and the hull threads with fresh water before reinstalling.

This drain plug uses our standard 1.5″ diameter thread pattern found on all Pelican sit-on-top and sit-inside kayaks manufactured since 2008. If you own a Pelican Argo, Mustang, Sentinel, Catch, or Challenger model, this plug will fit your drain port.
Older kayaks made before 2008 may use a metric thread size—check your owner’s manual or contact our support team with your hull identification number to confirm compatibility. The plug will not fit kayaks from other manufacturers unless they specifically adopted the Pelican thread standard. You can verify fit by measuring your existing drain port: the inner diameter should be 1.25″ and the thread pitch should be 8 threads per inch.

Drain Plug Questions
This drain plug uses our current thread standard introduced in 2008, which may not match kayaks manufactured before that year. Pelican models made between 2005-2007 used a metric thread size that requires a different plug design.
To verify compatibility, measure your drain port opening. The current standard has a 1.25-inch inner diameter with 8 threads per inch. If your measurements differ, contact our customer support team with your hull identification number and we'll identify the correct replacement part for your specific model year.
Replace your drain plug if you notice water seeping into the hull after you've installed it correctly, or if the plug turns freely without tightening. Visual signs include cracks in the polymer body, a flattened or torn O-ring seal, or stripped threads that won't grip the port.
Most paddlers replace their drain plug every 3-5 years depending on use frequency. If you paddle weekly in saltwater, inspect the seal every three months. The plug is inexpensive enough that we recommend replacing it at the first sign of wear rather than risking a mid-trip failure.
The drain plug must stay installed during all paddling activities. Its primary purpose is to seal the hull drain port and prevent water intrusion while you're on the water. You should only remove the plug when your kayak is on dry land and you want to drain any water that entered the hull through scupper holes or hatches.
Some paddlers mistakenly remove the plug to drain water while still afloat, but this creates a direct opening to the hull interior and will actually let more water in. Keep the plug installed until you've pulled your kayak fully out of the water at the end of your trip.
The drain plug seals the threaded port in your kayak hull that's designed for draining water after you've finished paddling. This port connects directly to the hollow interior of the hull and must remain sealed while you're on the water.
Scupper plugs are different—they fit the self-bailing drain holes on sit-on-top kayak decks. Those holes allow water that splashes onto the deck to drain back out, but some paddlers use scupper plugs to keep the deck dry in calm conditions. You need both types of plugs for complete water management on most Pelican sit-on-top models.
Hand-tighten the plug until you feel firm resistance, then turn it an additional quarter-turn (90 degrees) to compress the O-ring seal. This creates adequate sealing pressure without over-stressing the threads.
You should never need tools to install or remove the drain plug. If the plug won't turn by hand, the threads may have sand or debris buildup. Remove the plug, clean both the plug threads and the hull port with fresh water, then reinstall. Over-tightening with pliers or wrenches can crack the polymer body or strip the hull threads.
Small amounts of water inside the hull are normal on sit-on-top kayaks, which have scupper holes that allow some water exchange between the deck and hull interior. The drain plug keeps water from entering through the drain port specifically, but it doesn't create a completely dry hull on its own.
If you're seeing more than a few cups of water after an hour of paddling, check that your scupper holes aren't allowing excessive water in, inspect hatch seals for leaks, and verify the drain plug O-ring is creating a proper seal. A properly functioning system should require draining only after several hours on the water.
We don't sell replacement O-rings separately because the seal is molded into the plug body as a permanent component. The O-ring groove is precision-machined to match that specific seal diameter, and aftermarket O-rings typically don't provide the same compression ratio.
Replacement drain plugs cost less than $10 and include a fresh seal guaranteed to fit correctly. Attempting to pry out the old seal and install a generic O-ring often damages the groove and creates leak paths. We recommend replacing the entire plug unit when the seal shows wear.
