Our Pelican Challenger 130T is built for two paddlers who want stable, comfortable performance on calm waters. At 13 feet long with a 500-pound capacity, this tandem kayak offers plenty of space for couples, friends, or a parent and child to explore lakes and slow-moving rivers together.

We crafted the Challenger 130T with twin-sheet thermoform construction that balances lightweight portability with exceptional durability. The multi-chine flat bottom hull delivers stability that first-time paddlers appreciate, while the tunnel-shaped keel keeps you tracking straight with minimal effort.

Two adjustable ERGOFORM padded backrests support hours of comfortable paddling. Four integrated handles make tandem carrying and launching effortless at the water's edge.

Twin-Sheet Thermoform Construction

We manufacture the Pelican Challenger 130T using our proprietary RAM-X twin-sheet thermoform process. This construction method fuses two sheets of high-density polyethylene under heat and pressure, creating a rigid structure that resists impacts from rocks, docks, and rough handling.

Unlike single-layer rotomolded kayaks, the twin-sheet design reduces overall weight without sacrificing strength. The Challenger 130T weighs approximately 68 pounds, light enough for two people to carry comfortably from vehicle to shore. The thermoform material won’t degrade from UV exposure, and it maintains structural integrity across temperature extremes from northern winters to southern summers.

Stability and Tracking Performance
Sizing & fit

Stability and Tracking Performance

The multi-chine flat bottom hull design makes the Challenger 130T one of our most stable tandem platforms. New paddlers feel confident the moment they step aboard, and the wide 34-inch beam provides a solid foundation even when both paddlers shift weight simultaneously.

Tunnel-Shaped Keel Design

We integrated a tunnel-shaped keel into the hull bottom to improve directional tracking. This design feature channels water flow beneath the kayak, helping you maintain a straight course with less corrective paddling. The result is less fatigue on longer outings and better control in light winds or cross-currents.

Seating and Comfort Features

Both paddling positions feature our ERGOFORM padded backrests that adjust vertically to accommodate different torso heights. The backrests provide lumbar support without restricting your paddling motion, and they fold flat for compact storage and transport.

Molded footrests in both cockpits let each paddler dial in their leg extension for optimal power transfer and comfort. The footrests accommodate shoe sizes from youth to adult extra-large. Built-in bottle holders on each side of both cockpits keep water bottles secure and accessible without requiring extra gear or bungee rigging.

Perfect for my wife and me
We've taken the Challenger 130T out six times now on our local lake. It's stable enough that my wife feels comfortable even though she's never kayaked before. The seats are way more comfortable than I expected for the price point. We paddled for three hours last weekend and neither of us had any soreness.

Great starter tandem kayak
I bought this to paddle with my teenage son. We're both around 180 pounds and the kayak handles our combined weight without any issues. It tracks straight and doesn't feel tippy at all. We loaded it onto my SUV roof rack by ourselves with no problem.

Solid construction, tracks well
I was impressed with the build quality right out of the box. The hull feels thick and sturdy. The tracking is excellent for a flat-bottom kayak — we barely had to make steering corrections even in light wind. Only wish it came with paddles, but I understand why they're sold separately.

Comfortable for all-day trips
My husband and I paddle 8-10 miles at a time and the adjustable backrests make a huge difference. We can both find a comfortable position. The bottle holders are perfectly placed. This kayak has exceeded our expectations for a recreational tandem.

Easy to carry and launch
The four handles make it so easy for two people to carry from the car to the water. My friend and I are both in our 60s and we manage it without strain. The flat bottom makes it super stable when we're getting in and out at the dock.

Lightweight and durable tandem
We've banged this kayak into rocks and logs a few times and there's no damage at all. The material seems really tough. It's light enough that I can drag it up the beach by myself if needed. Great value for a recreational tandem kayak.

Pelican Challenger 130T Frequently Asked Questions

The Challenger 130T has a maximum weight capacity of 500 pounds. This accommodates two average-sized adults plus gear, or an adult and two children with room for coolers, dry bags, and other equipment. We recommend staying within 400-450 pounds for optimal performance and comfort.

The Challenger 130T weighs approximately 68 pounds. This weight makes it manageable for two people to lift onto roof racks, into truck beds, or onto kayak carts. The four integrated carrying handles are positioned at balanced lift points to distribute the weight evenly during transport.

The Challenger 130T performs well on slow to moderate moving water such as Class I rivers and calm sections of larger rivers. The tunnel-shaped keel and multi-chine hull provide good tracking and stability in light current. We do not recommend this kayak for whitewater or rapids, as it's designed for recreational flatwater paddling on lakes, ponds, and calm rivers.

No, paddles are sold separately to allow you to choose the paddle style and length that best fits your height and paddling preferences. We recommend selecting paddles based on each paddler's individual torso height and arm length. Our kayak paddle selection guide can help you determine the correct sizing for tandem kayaking.

The Challenger 130T fits standard kayak roof rack systems including J-cradles, saddle-style carriers, and stackers designed for kayaks up to 13.5 feet. The 13-foot length and 68-pound weight work with most crossbar systems rated for at least 75 pounds per bar. You'll need two crossbars spaced 24-36 inches apart for proper support.

While the Challenger 130T is designed as a tandem kayak, one person can paddle it solo by sitting in the rear position. Solo paddling from the rear seat helps maintain proper weight distribution and tracking. Performance will be slower and require more effort than a dedicated solo kayak due to the 13-foot length and tandem design.

Rinse the Challenger 130T with fresh water after each use, especially following saltwater or muddy river outings. Use mild soap and a soft brush for stubborn dirt. Store the kayak out of direct sunlight when possible, though the RAM-X material includes UV inhibitors. Check the drain plug before each trip and ensure backrest adjustment knobs are secure. No special maintenance or treatments are required for the thermoform hull.
