Twin-Sheet Thermoformed Construction

We build the Pelican Orion using advanced twin-sheet thermoforming, a manufacturing process that creates a lighter, stiffer hull compared to traditional rotomolded kayaks. Two sheets of high-density polyethylene are heated and vacuum-formed simultaneously, then fused together under controlled pressure.

This construction method produces a rigid structure with enhanced impact resistance and better tracking performance. The result is a kayak that weighs 43 pounds—light enough for solo loading onto most roof racks—yet strong enough to handle rocky shorelines and submerged obstacles. The smooth interior finish also means no sharp edges or rough spots that can snag gear or cause discomfort during long paddling days.

Cockpit Design & Seating Comfort
Sizing & fit

Cockpit Design & Seating Comfort

The Orion features a generous 22″ × 45″ cockpit opening that welcomes paddlers of all experience levels. We designed this larger opening to reduce the intimidation factor for beginners while still providing enough thigh contact for experienced paddlers who want responsive control.

Adjustable ERGOFORM™ Backrest

Our proprietary ERGOFORM™ seat system includes a multi-position backrest that adjusts to your preferred angle, supporting your lower back during hour-long paddles or full-day excursions. The padded cushion wicks moisture and dries quickly, while the adjustable footrests accommodate leg lengths from 28 to 38 inches. We positioned the seat low in the hull to lower your center of gravity, enhancing stability without sacrificing comfort.

Storage Solutions & Deck Features

The stern platform on the Orion includes heavy-duty bungee rigging that secures dry bags, coolers, or fishing tackle boxes up to 24 inches long. We molded drainage channels into the platform to prevent water pooling around your gear.

A convenient molded-in cup holder sits within easy reach of the cockpit, and the integrated paddle rest keeps your paddle secure during breaks or while you’re casting a line. Two molded carry handles—one at the bow and one at the stern—feature ergonomic grips that distribute weight evenly when you’re transporting the kayak short distances. For paddlers seeking additional versatility, the hull design shares similarities with our sit-on-top kayak models in terms of overall stability and ease of use on flat water.

Perfect stability for a beginner paddler
I've never felt unstable in this kayak, even when reaching for my camera or adjusting gear. The seat is surprisingly comfortable for a plastic kayak, and I can paddle for two hours without back pain. The weight is manageable for loading onto my SUV roof rack by myself.

Light enough to handle alone
At 43 pounds, I can carry the Orion from my garage to the water without help. The carry handles are well-placed and comfortable, which makes a huge difference when you're walking down a dock or across a beach. Great value for the build quality.

Excellent tracking on lakes and slow rivers
This kayak goes exactly where I point it without constantly correcting my course. I've used it on three different lakes and one slow-moving river, and it performs consistently well in all conditions. The cockpit is roomy enough that I never feel cramped during long paddles.

Storage space handles my fishing gear easily
The rear storage area with bungees holds my tackle box and a small cooler securely. I appreciate the cup holder for keeping my water bottle within reach. The paddle rest is a small feature that makes a big difference when I'm actively fishing.

Very stable platform for wildlife photography
I bought the Orion specifically for photographing birds and wildlife on local ponds. The stability allows me to set down my paddle and use both hands for my camera without worrying about tipping. It's quiet on the water and doesn't spook the wildlife I'm trying to photograph.

Durable construction survived rocky launch sites
We have some rough boat launches in our area with rocky shorelines, and this kayak has held up perfectly after a full season of use. No cracks, no soft spots, and the hull still looks like new. The twin-sheet construction definitely lives up to Pelican's durability claims.

Common Questions About the Pelican Orion

The Pelican Orion has a maximum weight capacity of 275 pounds. This includes the paddler's weight plus all gear, equipment, and supplies. We recommend staying at least 20-30 pounds below the maximum capacity for optimal performance and stability on the water.

Yes, the Orion's deck and hull can accommodate aftermarket fishing accessories. Many paddlers successfully install flush-mount rod holders, fish finders, and anchor trolleys using marine-grade mounting hardware. We recommend drilling pilot holes and using marine sealant to maintain the hull's watertight integrity when adding custom accessories.

The Orion is designed for calm to moderate water conditions including lakes, ponds, slow-moving rivers, and protected bays. We do not recommend using this kayak in open ocean environments, surf zones, or waters with strong currents and large waves. For coastal paddling, consider our touring models specifically designed for more challenging conditions.

The adjustable footrests feature a track system with multiple positions. To adjust, lift the footrest assembly slightly while sliding it forward or backward along the rails until you find your preferred leg extension. The footrest clicks into place at each position. Most paddlers find their ideal setting allows a slight knee bend when the feet are flat against the footrests.

We recommend a paddle between 220-240 cm in length for the Pelican Orion, depending on your height and paddling style. A shorter paddle (220-230 cm) works well for paddlers under 5'8" and those who prefer a higher stroke cadence. Taller paddlers or those favoring a more relaxed touring stroke should consider 230-240 cm paddles.

Yes, the Orion includes Pelican's limited lifetime warranty on the hull against manufacturing defects. This warranty covers structural integrity but does not cover normal wear, UV fading, or damage from improper use or storage. All accessories including the seat, bungee cords, and hardware carry a one-year warranty from the date of purchase.

While the twin-sheet thermoformed construction offers excellent UV resistance, we recommend storing your Orion indoors or under a UV-protective cover when not in use. Prolonged direct sunlight exposure can cause premature fading and material degradation. If outdoor storage is necessary, position the kayak in a shaded area and use a breathable kayak cover to protect against sun and moisture.
