★★★★★4.8· thousands of reviews

The Pelican Symbiosa kayak paddle lightweight construction makes every stroke easier, whether you're exploring calm lakes or navigating coastal waters. We engineered this paddle with fiberglass-reinforced polypropylene blades that balance durability with weight savings, so you can paddle longer without arm fatigue.

Our aluminum shaft features an ergonomic oval grip that indexes naturally in your hands, preventing the blade twist that wastes energy on every stroke. The asymmetrical blade design reduces flutter and catches cleanly, giving you efficient forward motion with less effort. At just 32 ounces, the Symbiosa delivers the performance recreational kayakers need without the premium price of carbon fiber.

Lightweight Construction & Materials

We built the Symbiosa around a weight-conscious design philosophy that doesn’t sacrifice durability. The fiberglass-reinforced polypropylene blades deliver stiffness for efficient power transfer while keeping the overall weight at 32 ounces, significantly lighter than traditional all-plastic paddles. This weight reduction becomes noticeable after the first hour on the water, when heavier paddles start causing shoulder strain.

The aluminum shaft provides corrosion resistance for saltwater use while maintaining the lightweight profile recreational paddlers demand. We added an oval cross-section grip area that indexes in your hands, so you always know blade orientation without looking down. The result is a paddle that feels nimble during quick maneuvering strokes and comfortable during long-distance touring.

Blade Design & Paddling Efficiency

Asymmetrical Blade Shape

The Symbiosa features asymmetrical blade geometry with a shorter upper edge that reduces air resistance during the recovery phase of your stroke. This design also creates a cleaner water entry with less splash, keeping you drier and maintaining forward momentum. The blade’s moderate surface area balances power with ease of use, making it ideal for recreational paddlers who want responsive performance without the fatigue of oversized blades.

Adjustable Feather Angle

Our adjustable ferrule system lets you customize the blade offset in 15-degree increments from 0 to 60 degrees. Feathering reduces wind resistance on the returning blade and is essential for headwind conditions. The ferrule locks securely with a push-button mechanism that won’t slip during aggressive paddling, yet adjusts easily when you’re ready to change positions or hand off the paddle to another paddler.

Sizing & Fit Guide

Choosing the correct paddle length ensures efficient stroke mechanics and prevents unnecessary fatigue. We offer the Symbiosa in three lengths to accommodate different paddler heights and kayak beam widths. For paddlers 5’0″ to 5’6″, we recommend the 220cm length. Paddlers between 5’6″ and 6’0″ typically find the 230cm length ideal, while those over 6’0″ or paddling wider recreational kayaks should consider the 240cm version.

The oval grip section measures 1.125 inches in diameter, sized for comfortable all-day use without requiring a vice grip. If you’re paddling a kayak wider than 28 inches or prefer a more vertical stroke style, size up one length. Our paddle’s lightweight construction means even the 240cm version won’t cause the pendulum effect that makes oversized heavy paddles feel unwieldy.

Perfect weight for all-day paddling
I switched from my old heavy plastic paddle to the Symbiosa and immediately felt the difference. My shoulders don't ache after three hours anymore, and I can actually paddle faster with less effort. The oval grip makes it easy to keep the blades oriented correctly without constantly checking.

Great value for recreational use
I wasn't ready to spend $200 on a carbon paddle, but I wanted something lighter than the basic paddle that came with my kayak. The Symbiosa hits the sweet spot perfectly. It's noticeably lighter and the blades feel much more efficient in the water.

Solid upgrade from stock paddles
We bought two of these for our tandem kayak and they're a huge improvement. The adjustable feather angle is nice for switching positions, and the drip rings actually work. Only wish they came in more color options, but performance-wise they're excellent.

Lightweight and durable combination
I've used this paddle for six months on both lakes and coastal bays. The lightweight design really makes a difference on longer trips, and it's held up perfectly despite some contact with oyster bars and rocky shorelines. The ferrule adjustment is still tight and smooth.

Ideal for touring and fitness paddling
I use my kayak for exercise and this paddle makes a noticeable difference in my workout efficiency. The blade shape catches cleanly and releases smoothly, so I can maintain a higher cadence without fighting the water. After 500 miles, it still looks and performs like new.

Comfortable grip for long distances
The oval shaft is a game-changer for me. I used to get hand cramps with round shafts because I'd grip too tight to keep the blades aligned. With the Symbiosa, my hands relax naturally and I can paddle 10+ miles without any discomfort.

Good to know

Symbiosa Paddle Questions

The Pelican Symbiosa kayak paddle lightweight design weighs 32 ounces, which is typically 8-12 ounces lighter than basic all-plastic paddles. This weight reduction significantly decreases arm fatigue during multi-hour paddling sessions. The difference becomes most noticeable after the first hour on the water, when heavier paddles start causing shoulder strain and reducing your stroke efficiency.

Yes, the Symbiosa is fully compatible with saltwater use. The aluminum shaft resists corrosion, and the fiberglass-reinforced blades won't degrade in marine environments. We recommend rinsing the entire paddle with fresh water after each saltwater outing, paying special attention to the ferrule mechanism where salt can accumulate. With proper care, the Symbiosa will provide years of reliable performance in coastal conditions.

For paddlers 5'0" to 5'6", choose the 220cm length. If you're between 5'6" and 6'0", the 230cm version is ideal. Paddlers over 6'0" or those with kayaks wider than 28 inches should select the 240cm length. If you prefer a more vertical, higher-angle stroke style, size down one length; touring paddlers who use a lower-angle technique may prefer to size up.

Hand control refers to which hand maintains a fixed grip on the shaft while the other hand rotates. Right-hand control means your right hand stays fixed while your left rotates during the stroke. The Symbiosa's adjustable ferrule accommodates either preference. Most paddlers naturally develop a dominant-hand control preference, though you can experiment with both settings to find what feels most natural.

The Symbiosa is designed for recreational flatwater use, including lakes, slow rivers, and protected coastal areas. While the fiberglass-reinforced blades can handle occasional rock contact, they're not built for the repeated impacts and aggressive bracing required in whitewater conditions. For technical river running, we recommend our more robust paddle models designed specifically for whitewater use.

Press the button on the ferrule mechanism and pull the two shaft sections apart slightly. Rotate one blade to your desired feather angle, aligned with the index markings at 15-degree increments. Release the button and push the sections back together until you hear and feel the button click into place. Test the connection by trying to twist the blades; they should remain firmly locked in position.

We back the Symbiosa with our limited lifetime warranty, covering defects in materials and workmanship under normal recreational use. The warranty does not cover damage from impacts, improper storage, or commercial use. If you experience any issues with blade delamination, ferrule failure, or shaft defects, contact our customer service team with photos and proof of purchase for warranty evaluation.
